About 6,850 years ago Mount Mazama, a volcano, collapsed and filled with water to produce Crater Lake, one of the world's best known calderas. The caldera is about 6 miles wide. The catastrophic pyroclastic eruption released about 12 cubic miles of magma to the surface. It was one of the largest eruptions in the last 10,000 years. More information :/http://www.nps.gov/crla/
On a peacefull morning in September 2006, the lake was producing it's own weather in the form of clouds rising up the sides at 30mph. The temperature is 32F, there is a light dusting of snow and the guests in the Crater Lake Lodge awaken to another day of wonder.
